Sonic Double Dash is a hack based on sonic 1 that greatly revamps the first zone into something that you'll hopefully consider fresh and fun. Technical changes are relativly minimal as the hack has a greater focus on creating new layouts and artwork. The levels are built with the new double dash in mind, a redesigned drop dash that's power can change the flow of how you play, epscially useful for speedrunners or those who just want to have a good time. Forget that last part as it makes this sound like a dating profile.

Sonic ERaZor is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) created by Selbi. This hack is unlike many other hacks, featuring a heavy in-game story line, unique challenges, and never seen before gameplay mechanics. These elements are often somehow related to explosions, which is why this hack is sometimes called "What if Michael Bay directed Sonic 1". When first released back in early 2010, Selbi stated that this hack has no goal whatsoever and any ideas he came up with just went in. Today's releases have a lot more structure and thought out gameplay elements. The difficulty has been steadily decreased between the different versions, mostly due to some negative feedback regarding the first releases, although they all have an above average difficulty, and is therefore regarded by many as quite interesting and challenging, if not frustrating. A notable aspect about this hack is that it contains many cutscenes, chapter screens and story screens. The game's first scene after the title screen is entirely a cutscene.

Sonic Gaiden is a 2003 fan-made hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.The hack is a co-operative effort between two noteworthy hackers in the community, Yuski the Dog and Esrael Neto. Esrael is most famous for his work on Sonic 2 Delta, a hack of the Sonic 2 Beta ROM which re-coded all the incomplete elements and restored deleted levels. Yuski had created a previous hack in 2000 called Mighty the Armadillo which was a sprite and palette hack of the U.S. Sonic 1 ROM. Sonic Gaiden was born when Esrael e-mailed Yuski a Sonic 1 ROM-hack with both Sonic and Mighty playable.

Sonic in Paynt is a parody hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by sebmal (credited as "thehulk" in the hack as a semi-successful attempt at trolling Sonic Cult). In an attempt to make the worst hack possible, uncoordinated palettes and clashing music and were utilized.This hack is similar to the tongue-in-cheek hack Sonic 1337 by Ultima.There's also a sequel, Sonic and Tals in Paynt. It's even worse.
