Free Play mode:
Press Up, Down, C, A, Left, Right, B, C when the "Press start button" message appears at the title screen. A sound will confirm correct code entry.

Hint: Avoiding dangerous areas:
Your character jumps backwards when hit by an enemy. When trying to quickly cross some dangerous areas where you can take damage, this can cause you to stay in the bad location much longer. To reduce your damage, turn around just before getting hit. This will cause the impact to push you forward, getting you out of the dangerous area faster.
