Mecha Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Mecha Sonic in Sonic 1) is a hack created as a proof-of-concept by Iron Sonic of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Mega Drivein which the player plays as Mecha Sonic from Sonic & Knuckles. The controls are the same as in the original Sonic 1, save for the ability to perform the Spin Dash. Each sprite has been edited, and the player size and other aspects of the Sonic object have been changed to accommodate Mecha Sonic's larger size.

Whilst the game is mostly playable, there are certain areas in the game that Mecha Sonic cannot complete due to his increased size; prime examples of this includeSpring Yard Zone and Scrap Brain Zone.

Sonic 1 Lunacy is a work-in-progress hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by the Masochistic Maniacs. The hack features three levels of difficulty (Normal, Hard and Lunatic) with custom levels and ported/custom sounds/music.

Sonic The Hedgehog: The Lost Worlds is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by ExecByte. This hack features all of the zones that were cut from Sonic 2 during development. Some zones have been ported from the Sonic 2 Simon Wai prototype and then finished up, and some have been created based on magazine pictures and information from interviews with people who worked on Sonic 2.

Kirby in Sonic the Hedgehog is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by Darkon360. It features Kirby whom replaces Sonic as the lead protagonist. Kirby can inhale most enemies but cannot copy their abilities.

Sonic - Hyper X is a 2004 hack of Sonic the Hedgehog created by Skaarg. It was one of the first Sonic hacks that had all of its music changed. In addition, it also featured modified palettes and layouts. Skaarg had stated that he was going to continue to expand upon his hack, but it seems highly unlikely at this point.

The Homing attack/jumpdash in Sonic 2 proof of concept hack is a hack which adds the homing attack to Sonic's arsenal of moves in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The Homing attack is a move which is performed in mid-air to zoom into Badniks and objects with a high speed attack. In addition, trailing images appear when the player reaches top speed. It was created primarily by Hitaxas but with assistance by shobiz.

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (Genesis) is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by Xenowhirl which attempts to recreate certain aspects of the Game Boy Advance Sonic 1port titled Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.

Sonic Gaiden is a 2003 fan-made hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

The hack is a co-operative effort between two noteworthy hackers in the community, Yuski the Dog and Esrael Neto. Esrael is most famous for his work on Sonic 2 Delta, a hack of the Sonic 2 Beta ROM which re-coded all the incomplete elements and restored deleted levels. Yuski had created a previous hack in 2000 called Mighty the Armadillo which was a sprite and palette hack of the U.S. Sonic 1 ROM. Sonic Gaiden was born when Esrael e-mailed Yuski a Sonic 1 ROM-hack with both Sonic and Mighty playable.

Flicky Turncoat DX is a hack of Sonic 1 by GT Koopa. It has a top down art style similar to the 8-bit game Sonic Blast. The main idea of the game that, like the namesake, the small animals that Sonic used to save now hurt you. Luckily for the player, a shield now protects from the small animals, with the added ability of saving up said shields. Another quirk of the hack is that spikes kill you instantly, ala Megaman. Finally, there is an emerald monitor hidden within each act, requiring 50 rings to activate. The first zone, Pocky Field, is currently available to play.

Goplanes is a homebrew made by djcouchycouch in 2014, the sound, mustic effects are not developed yet.

Eggman the Dictator in Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Eggman in Sonic 1) is a rather interesting hack of Sonic the Hedgehog made by L0st - Sonic is replaced byEggman, who runs through the stages. Due to Eggman's larger sprites, the mappings and collision engine were rewritten from scratch, and Eggman also jumps at the same height and runs at the same speed, above and below water. As a result, Eggman cannot collect rings, open item boxes, destroy enemies, be hurt by objects or drown—the only way to kill Eggman is by landing on spikes, getting crushed, or falling off the screen (all three of which require a reset). Because of this, the hack is little more than a novelty, but is an impressive one nonetheless. Eggman can't use debug mode either, but Level Select still works. Also the Special Stages are unchanged, as Eggman can't enter Special Stages from the main game.

Sonic 2 EX (often abbreviated as S.EX) is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by Mr. EX. Its highlights include spring-based layouts like those of Project Shadow 2, new art and layouts, and original music.

Sonic 1 Easy mode is port of Sonic 1's Easy mode from the Sega Saturn game Sonic Jam. Easy mode uses completely different level layouts. The level order is also different and some levels are omitted completely (but are still playable using level select).

Sonic 2 Dimps Edition is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by Spanner. This hack attempts to mimic what Sonic 2 may have been like if it were created by Dimps. This means incorporating many features found in Dimps games such as random speed boosters. This does not include features common in most modern Sonic titles with the exception of a homing attack. The hack was discontinued due to various reasons and there was currently no intention to return to it, except that somebody else now has the source code and is intending to finish off the job. Version 1.5 was uploaded to fix some reported bugs.
